‘ALTER EGO’ - SHADOWLAND
CURATOR, ART & SOUND
ALTER EGO SHOW, Summer 2022
This "Alter Ego" exploration is the latest installment in Innerhofer's "Shadowland" series, which also includes "Heavy-metal," "Sandmen," " Formations" and "Deconstr-Activist."
Innerhofer enthusiastically accepted the role of curator for the 'Alter Ego' show. Upon entering the 1875 Gothic architectural building, now known as Grand Street Gallery, memories of her upbringing in the European, historical, medieval, and strict religious environment of the Italian Alps flooded her consciousness. Inspired by this, she seamlessly blended the essence of Gothic architecture with the recollections of her ancient wonderland past.
For this show, she composed the piece 'Alpen Ego,' which plays in the background, enhancing the viewer's immersive experience.
The art exhibited in this show is primarily autobiographical, but it also includes an homage to Gemma Chan, the gallery owner, who has a penchant for painting birds.
In this exhibition, Innerhofer continues her exploration of the paradoxical nuances between wake and sleep, conscious and subconscious, space and time, reality and imagination. As an advanced meditator, she often resides in the quiet space of nothing and everything—the otherworldly dimension between our thoughts in the solitude of our inner world. Her technique juxtaposes color with black and white photographic images, electronically manipulated to compel viewers to confront and question the boundaries between the real and surreal, the literal and abstract, light and dark, present and past. She also employs pixelation to subconsciously transport viewers into the familiar electronic hum of the virtual reality that envelops us in our modern-day lives.
Innerhofer invites viewers to interact with her art by hanging each piece in various orientations—colors side up, down, or sideways—eliciting different visual and emotional responses. This approach reveals differences in the perception of exact, literal color versus the more volumetric, abstract black-and-white image.
